As you all listen to the news about the student protests over illegal immigration there are some things that you should be aware of.
As most of you know my wife is in charge of the English-as-a-second-language (ESL) department at large southern California high school, which is designated a Title 1 school, meaning that its students average lower socio economic and income levels. Most of the schools you are hearing about--South Gate High, Bell Gardens, Huntington Park, etc.--where these students are protesting, are also Title 1 schools.
My wife tells me that 100% of the students in her school and other Title 1 schools are on the free breakfast, free lunch program. When I say free breakfast I'm not talking a glass of milk and roll...but a full breakfast and cereal bar with fruits and juices that would make a Marriott proud. The waste of this food is monumental, with trays and trays of it being dumped in the trash uneaten.
She estimates that About 75% or more have cell phones.
The school also provides day care centers for the unwed teenage pregnant girls so they can attend class without the inconvenience of having to arrange for babysitters.
She was ordered to spend $700,000 on her department or risk losing funding for the upcoming year even though there was little need for anything; her budget was already substantial. She ended up buying new computers for their computer learning center; half of which, one month later, have been carved with graffiti by the appreciative students who obviously feel humbled and grateful to have a free education in America.
Free medical, free education, free food, day care etc. etc. Is it any wonder they feel entitled to not only be in this country but to demand rights, and entitlements?
To my bleeding-heart liberal friends who want to point out how much these illegal immigrants contribute to our society because they LIKE their gardener and housekeeper and they like to pay less for tomatoes: spend some time in the real world of illegal immigration and see the TRUE costs. Higher insurance, Medical facilities closing, higher medical costs, more crime, lower standards of education in our schools, overcrowding, new diseases etc., etc., etc.. For me, I'll pay more for tomatoes.
We need to wake up. The guest worker program will be a disaster because we won't have the guts to enforce it. Does anyone in their right mind really think they will leave and return voluntarily?

If this were not true, we would have 'minutemen' monitoring the tundra between Nova Scotia and Maine. Where are the 'anti-immigrant' activists screaming for the Navy to get out on Lake Superior and shoot those Canadian canoes out of the water before the illegals reach Minnesota and take up residence in Lake Woebegone?
We'd be trying to get a fence built across the 2000 plus miles from the Pacific to the Great lakes, we'd be seeking out all those Europeans who overstayed their visas.
You 'anti-immigrant' protectionists [aka foamers] can spin it any way you want, but the reality is you are racists; you hate people of color, particularly brown skinned people.
So called "illegal" aliens are people trying to go from a poor place to a rich place to make a living. But if you're watching the landscape from the the picture windows in foamer land you see that they are felons! By definition! And by definition, where do felons belong? In prison. Therefore, what we need to do is put 30,000 troops on the Mexican border, ready to shoot, with high-tech weapons as 'force amplifiers,' to hunt them down, round them up and throw them in the many new prisons that we will quickly build. Can you say "another no-bid Halliburton contract"?
Foamers routinely deny their fear of foreigners, dark people and sex. That's why they love code words so. It allows them to pretend that they are doing what they do for high moral reasons. It allows them to pretend, not just to others, but to themselves as well.
Fear of dark people is the impulse that's most denied. Overt racism is rare indeed. Though the spectacle of Fox News's John Gibson urging white people to have more babies lest the lesser breeds outbreed us, came close in his smiley, Christian way. But actions speak louder than words.
Face it, you are racist whether you admit it or not.
I am a dark skinned person, I am a legal immigrant. Your rant on race and fear of "dark skinned people" is comical, and you sir, are full of shit! Using race to inflame people against each other is racist to the core. The minutemen are protecting the U.S. from ILLEGAL PEOPLE crossing our border en mass! They are not crossing en mass from our northern border. Unfortunatly, people like you like to seperate PEOPLE by a particular color and have your way with your hateful words and racist bent, and hope that you will feel better about yourself. Those who use race to inflame people against each other are racist themselves! You had better check yourself deep for those signs that you may be a racist yourself!
I suggest you tone down the vulgarities and stick to discussing the issue rationally. You've stressed the same point over and again, yet you have no foundation beyond just your opinion. You assume to know me, though you have no idea who I am, where I live, my nationality, whatever-- you just make a blanket assumption and attack.
Your descriptions below of what is occuring is straight out of the anti-immigration foamers's talking points. But it narrows the issue to such a degree that it in fact becomes bigotry. It is bigotry toward those who seek refuge from an impoverished homeland, those who have fallen victim to US foreign policies, those who only enter from the southern border. And that is my point. The illegal immigration issue stretches all borders. It is not just those risking their lives in the southern desert, it is Europeans who come here and overstay their visas, it is students who do not return home after their schooling has ended, it is Asians who are smuggled in as indentured servants. But most of all, it is a backlash to years of hegemony and economic oppression. To single out the southern border is simply bigotry, if not outright racism toward brown skinned people.
Illegal immigration may be a problem, but it's not a big problem. Their impact on health care, for example, is utterly trivial compared to our real health care problems. Their impact on wages is irrelevant compared to Congress's refusal to raise the minimum wage. Their impact on jobs is minor compared to the wide variety of ills that affect the American job market; globalization, the growth of corporate power, America's disinvestment in infrastructure, the weakening of unions and the misplaced economics policies of the government (if you take at face value the claim that they are designed to stimulate the economy and create jobs).
I'll say it again. The "immigration" issue is not about immigration. It's about Mexicans, those dark foreigners. There are no Minute Men, or Second Men or Hour Men for that matter, out to patrol the frozen wastes from the Straits of San Juan de la Fuca to the St. Lawrence Seaway. There are no foamers screaming for the Navy to get out on Lake Superior and shoot those Canadian canoes out of the water before the illegals reach Minnesota and take up residence in Lake Woebegone.
