Cease Fire Shaky At Best

From ABC News:
BEIRUT (Reuters) - Israeli commandos raided a Hizbollah stronghold in eastern Lebanon on Saturday in what Beirut described as a "naked violation" of the U.N.-backed truce that ended Israel's 34-day war with the Shi'ite guerrillas.

Why should anyone comply with UN resolutions anyway? The UN has no teeth.
Saddam ignored the UN for years with little consequence.

I take it your a right wing American. I can't imagine anyone else on planet earth (with the exception of vile dictators ) that would as a question as strange as that.

The UN is a body that represents the member states contained. If the UN has no teeth then the responsibility for that lack of teeth lies with the member states. If you are genuinely concerned by the lack of teeth then may I suggest you demand that your country does it's bit in creating those teeth

For example ,How many US (or UK) soldiers have been sent to join the UN peacekeeping force ? none I believe ...

The whole point of the UN is that the entire world each brings forward a tooth and then we end up with a full set of teeth

If your own country is not supplying a tooth then you know where to complain about the lack of teeth

"Saddam ignored the UN for years with little consequence."

I would hardly call the death of up to 1 million innocent civilians due to lack of basic medications and supplies little consequence. If the death of up to 1 million innocent Iraqis is of little consequence then pray what would you call the tragic events of 9/11 where only 3000 died?

Insignificant ?

It certainly appears (with hindsight) that through a combination of inspections and his own actions , Saddam had in fact complied with the UN resolutions far more than we first thought. When he did not comply he was quickly found out by the UN inspection teams and as the American government would say (until 2003) Saddam was in his box

There is no doubt that UN resolutions have consequences. It is such a shame that those countries who act above and beyond UN resolutions are not held acountable.

Bush trotted out his sham cowpoke "Yer widdus er yer aginus" resolution to attack Iraq, but even without France blocking he didn't have the votes, so he IGNORED the UN and attacked without introducing his patently bogus plan to the UN. See what happens when you elect an IDIOT as president?

For the record I am not a right winger or Neocon if you prefer. Many of my views are likely more in agreement with lefties. I'm a Pragmatic Libertarian who loathes big government, especially theocracies.

I'm not tickled about US military operations either. The present action however is well underway.Running away is simply out of the question. Hezbollah is no doubt energized by Israelis recent retreat. How emboldened will the fanatics (who blow themselves up)be if we run now?

You would be hard pressed to argue that Saddam gave a rat's behind about his people. Saddam ignored the UN with little consequence to himself for a number of years. To assert that Saddam was in compliance is less than honest. Did he or did he not fire at US aircraft patrolling the no fly zones? He either complied or he didn't comply. If he "sort of" complied then he was out of compliance.

Yep, the Israelis have been ignoring the UN for 58 years.

It is not that that UN is to blame or at fault, it is because its members do not play by the rules.

I think that the UN would do better residing in Switzerland than the US and if a country does not play by the rules then they should be kicked out of the UN.

Wonder how long the US would last?

Israel wouldn't last much longer.
